Calculate your dirt quantity
Use the formula below to calculate the number of cubic yards needed for your project
Length (in feet) X Width (in feet) = Total Square Feet
Total Square Feet X Depth (use chart below) = Cubic Yards
Example:
Area to add dirt: 20 feet X 35 feet
You would like to add 5 " of dirt
20 X 35 = 700 square feet
700 X .0154 ( from depth chart for 5") = 10.78 or 11 cubic yards
How much will 1 yard cover?
1 yard @ 1" will cover 322 square feet
1 yard @ 2" will cover 162 square feet
1 yard @ 3" will cover 108 square feet
1 yard @ 4" will cover 81 square feet
1 yard @ 5" will cover 65 square feet
1 yard @ 6" will cover 54 square feet
Depth Chart
1" deep .0031
2" deep .0062
3" deep .0093
4" deep .0123
5" deep .0154
6" deep .0185
7" deep .0216
8" deep .0247
9" deep .0278
10" deep .0309
11" deep .0340
12" deep .0370
If you are filling in a tapered area (side view would be a triangle): Use largest depth in formula above then divide total in half for yardage needed.
